Eventually, the drug can begin chasing the person\u2019s entire life.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heroin dependence is not simply a story about a drug. It can become a story about a person&#8217;s health, relationships, education, work, finances, family, dignity and future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For families watching someone they love become dependent on heroin, the experience can be frightening and exhausting. What may begin as experimentation or occasional use can develop into repeated use, tolerance, dependence, cravings and continued use despite serious consequences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is another side to this story:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Recovery is possible.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the problem is the first step toward addressing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>1. WHAT IS HEROIN?<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heroin is an illicit opioid derived from morphine, which itself comes from the opium poppy. After entering the brain, heroin is rapidly converted into morphine and acts on opioid receptors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These receptors are involved in pain, reward, pleasure, breathing and other important functions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why can heroin become so addictive?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>It can produce intense euphoria.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The brain&#8217;s reward system becomes involved.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeated use can lead to <\/span><b>tolerance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning more of the substance may be needed to produce an effect.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dependence can develop, producing withdrawal symptoms when use is reduced or stopped.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cravings can become powerful and difficult to control.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO describes opioid dependence as a disorder involving impaired control over opioid use, increasing priority given to opioid use and continued use despite harm. Physical dependence and withdrawal may also occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why telling someone simply to \u201cuse willpower\u201d often fails to address the full medical and psychological nature of opioid dependence.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>2. CHITTA, SMACK, BROWN SUGAR \u2014 WHAT DO THESE NAMES MEAN?<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In India and other parts of South Asia, street terms such as <\/span><b>Chitta, Smack and Brown Sugar<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be used for illicit opioid products.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these names do <\/span><b>not guarantee a standardized chemical composition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>This is extremely important.<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Street drugs can vary greatly in strength and composition.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A product sold under one name may not contain the same substances from one batch to another.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Users may not know exactly what they are consuming.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unknown composition makes the effects and overdose risk difficult to predict.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, it is unsafe to assume that a street name tells you exactly what is inside a substance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The name on the packet does not tell the whole story.<\/b><\/p>\n<h1><b>3. WHAT ELSE MAY BE PRESENT IN ILLICIT HEROIN?<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most dangerous aspects of illicit drugs is uncertainty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illicitly manufactured or distributed substances can contain unexpected substances or contaminants. In a recovery context, it can describe a person&#8217;s <\/span><b>sense of purpose, values, relationships, self-respect and hope<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addiction can gradually narrow life around the substance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery therefore involves more than physical abstinence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also involve asking:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Who am I without the drug?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>What kind of life do I want?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>What relationships do I want to rebuild?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>What do I want my future to look like?<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>5. HOW HEROIN CAN DAMAGE THE NEXT GENERATION<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The consequences of heroin dependence can extend beyond the individual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Families can experience:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broken trust<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflict<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional exhaustion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disruption of education and employment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social isolation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear about the person&#8217;s future<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also important infectious-disease risks, particularly when drugs are injected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharing contaminated injecting equipment can transmit <\/span><b>HIV and viral hepatitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including hepatitis C. WHO identifies HIV and viral hepatitis among important harms associated with opioid use, particularly in populations exposed to injection-related risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What about fertility and sexual health?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance dependence can be associated with sexual and reproductive health problems, but we should not tell readers that heroin automatically causes infertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual and reproductive effects can vary between individuals and can be influenced by the drug, general health, nutrition, infections, lifestyle and other medical factors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That distinction matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The goal is not to frighten people with exaggerated claims. The real facts are serious enough.<\/b><\/p>\n<h1><b>6. HEROIN, INDIA AND THE WIDER SOCIAL COST<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The illicit drug trade is not only a health issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also create wider social and economic harm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illegal drug markets can generate:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organized criminal activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial exploitation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Violence and instability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of productivity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Family disruption<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pressure on healthcare and social services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vulnerability among young people<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From this perspective, reducing heroin dependence is not merely an individual objective\u2014it is also part of protecting families, communities and the future of young people.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>But there is an important distinction.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person suffering from addiction should not automatically be labelled a criminal or an enemy of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The illicit market profits from addiction. It should be managed appropriately rather than treated as a test of willpower.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Evidence-based treatment<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO recommends a range of treatments for opioid dependence, including opioid agonist treatment with medicines such as methadone or buprenorphine, as well as psychosocial support and other clinically appropriate options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Counseling and behavioral support<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding triggers, habits, emotions and decision-making can be an important part of recovery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Family involvement<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Constructive family support can strengthen recovery.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b> Relapse prevention<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recovery planning should continue beyond the initial withdrawal period.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>One important truth:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Detoxification alone is not the same thing as recovery.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO guidance emphasizes ongoing treatment and support because withdrawal without continuing care carries a significant risk of returning to opioid use.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>8.
