The dependency may not.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a new and increasingly important conversation that families, recovering individuals and rehabilitation professionals need to have.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have spent years talking about illegal drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heroin.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chitta.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioids.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannabis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there is another problem that can remain hidden behind the word <\/span><b>\u201cmedicine.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Prescription-medicine misuse.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A medicine can be legitimate when prescribed for a genuine medical reason and taken exactly as directed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when a person begins taking a prescription medicine without appropriate medical supervision, takes more than prescribed, uses somebody else&#8217;s prescription, or takes it to experience a high, the situation can become <\/span><b>misuse and potentially another substance-use problem.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> NIDA defines prescription-drug misuse to include taking medication differently from prescribed, taking another person&#8217;s prescription, or taking medication to get high.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And this is where families need to become more aware.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>1. THE BIG QUESTION: DID THE DRUG CHANGE \u2014 OR DID THE ADDICTION?<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imagine a person who has been dependent on heroin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They stop using heroin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone thinks:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u201cHe is cured.\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then the person begins seeking another substance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name has changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The packaging has changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The source may have changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the behaviour has not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person is still chasing:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>relief \u2192 escape \u2192 intoxication \u2192 craving \u2192 use \u2192 temporary relief \u2192 craving again.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><b>This is not necessarily recovery.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It may be <\/span><b>a change in the substance while the addictive pattern remains.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That distinction is extremely important.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>2. MEDICINE IS NOT THE SAME AS ABUSE \u2014 BUT MEDICINE CAN BE MISUSED<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This point must be understood clearly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are medicines that doctors prescribe appropriately for pain and other medical conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also evidence-based medications that clinicians may use in the treatment of opioid dependence. WHO currently recommends several treatment options, including opioid agonist treatment with methadone or buprenorphine, alongside psychosocial support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, it would be incorrect to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cEvery medicine used during addiction treatment is abuse.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it is equally important to recognize another reality:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>A prescription does not automatically make misuse safe.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a person uses medication:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to get high,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">without a prescription,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in a way different from medical instructions,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at higher amounts than prescribed,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to replace an illicit drug without appropriate clinical supervision,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or because they have developed a psychological pattern of constantly seeking substances,<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the situation can become substance misuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription opioids can cause dependence, overdose and even death, and overdose risk can rise with higher doses, longer or more frequent use and combinations with other substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>3. \u201cI HAVE STOPPED HEROIN\u201d \u2014 BUT WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where families can sometimes be misled.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person may genuinely stop using heroin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But stopping heroin does not automatically mean that the underlying addiction has been resolved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The family may see:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>No heroin.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they may not see:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>New cravings.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>New substance-seeking behaviour.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>New misuse.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>New tolerance.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>New dependency.<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><b>New risks.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The substance may be different.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The pattern can remain the same.<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_532\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-532\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-532 size-medium\" title=\"Title: The Complex Cycle of Prescription Drug Dependency\" src=\"https:\/\/startafreshcounselling.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Gemini_Generated_Image_rmxw8jrmxw8jrmxw-1-300x164.png\" alt=\"An older man in a dirty hoodie and sweatpants sits on a severely tattered and torn fabric couch in a very messy and dilapidated room with peeling paint. THE \u201cLEGAL\u201d LABEL CAN CREATE A FALSE SENSE OF SAFETY<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest dangers is the psychological difference between:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cdrug\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cmedicine.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person may think:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is prescribed, so it cannot be dangerous.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That assumption is false.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription medicines can have serious risks when misused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC notes that prescription opioids carry risks of addiction, overdose and death. The risk can also increase when opioids are combined with alcohol, benzodiazepines, other sedatives or other opioids.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The word \u201cmedicine\u201d should never become a license for misuse.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><b>5. TOLERANCE \u2014 WHEN THE BODY STARTS DEMANDING MORE<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeated exposure to certain drugs can lead to <\/span><b>tolerance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, meaning the body becomes less responsive to the same amount over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person may begin thinking:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cThis amount is not enough anymore.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the amount increases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then the person begins thinking about the next dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can create a dangerous cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>More tolerance can mean more risk.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC specifically identifies increasing tolerance with prescription opioid use as a risk factor for opioid use disorder and potentially fatal overdose.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>6. CDC states that anyone taking prescription opioids can be at risk of overdose, and risk increases with higher doses, longer use and certain combinations with other substances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WHO also states that opioid overdose can cause breathing difficulties and death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Overdose awareness must include medicines as well as illicit drugs.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The message should not be:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cIllegal drugs are dangerous, medicines are safe.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The better message is:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u201cAny substance capable of affecting the brain and body must be used responsibly and, when prescribed, under appropriate medical supervision.\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<h1><b>8. THE MOST DANGEROUS SENTENCE: \u201cI NEED IT TO FEEL NORMAL.\u201d<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sentence deserves attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A person may begin saying:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cI cannot function without it.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cI need it to sleep.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cI need it to calm down.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cI need it because withdrawal is difficult.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This can become psychologically powerful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person may stop asking:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u201cHow do I become healthy?\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and start asking:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>\u201cWhich substance will make me feel normal?\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is a very different mindset.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Recovery must change the question.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWhat can I take?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we should encourage:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWhat can I change?\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<h1><b>9.
